Dominant frequency

The strongest oscillation between 1 and 40 Hz, found after the 1/f background is removed. "None" means no peak stands out — a normal answer on frontal channels.

Bands

"None" is the usual answer, and it is not a fault. These electrodes sit frontally and temporally; alpha is strongest over the occipital cortex, which this headband cannot reach. Most of the time an awake recording simply has no peak standing above its own background.

Why the background is removed: EEG power falls off as 1/f, so the raw spectrum is a slide rather than a landscape. Taking its maximum reports 1–2 Hz on almost any recording, awake or asleep — which says nothing about the person. The background is modelled and subtracted first, and only a local peak rising 2.5 dB above it counts.

Read the slope. Around 1/f¹ is ordinary awake EEG. Much steeper means drift dominates. Near 1/f⁰ — a flat spectrum — means the electrodes are not on a head at all.

Mains harmonics and the instrument's own sampleRate/12 lines (21.3, 42.7, 64 Hz) are excluded: they are coherent enough to win a peak search without being anything the brain did.
